The Meaning Behind DoGood Designs

 

DoGood Designs is a double entendre for creating quality personalized products "doing good" designs with out desire to "DoGood" in a socially responsible way. 

 

 

One defining moment can change the entire trajectory of your life

Way back in March of 2011, my husband, young son and I were at an event and heard Blake Mycoskie, speak about how he started his company, TOMS shoes.  His speech and his story made such an impact on us that it changed the entire trajectory of our lives from that day on. Mycoskie spoke about what was a new concept at this time...social entrepreneurism.  He started a for-profit business, but incorporated "giving" into his business mode. We read his best selling book, "Start Something That Matters" and took that concept to heart.  

 

Both being entreprenuerial at heart, my husband and I thought that there couldn't be a better way to teach our young son the importance of being a good person; and by extension, to exemplify this by creating a socially responsible company of our own.

For the next year, we researched the types of businesses we could start that would matter.  We built a personalization business at home, behind to the scenes, but ended up needing more space to work.

A few years later, we bought an old, dilapidated building that was an eyesore on Main Street - the center of our small city.  When we were looking for a site for our store, it seemed like a perfect way to start to "be the change we wanted to see" - in our city.  Change doesn't happen on it's own.  We had to take the lead. Maybe others would take notice and follow suit.

Our small family and a couple of great friends worked for months gutting the entire building down to the cinderblock.  We made the building more energy efficient by replacing the windows and adding foam insulation.  We totally replaced the electric and plumbing.  We gave the ol' gal a facelift with all new brick exterior.   We brought her into the 21st century with a cool new vibe in the interior.  Check out our 1 minute "movie trailer" below that depicts our journey.

We DoGood and and Give Back.  We have been committed to giving back since we founded our company back in 2012. We make monthly donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital for research to find a cure for childhood cancers. 

 

Imagine what could happen if every company, every day, in the entire world, were committed to giving back to charity?  So many people could be helped.  We choose to "be the change we want to see" and hope others take notice and join us.  That's how change begins.

As our business grows, our ability to provide greater outreach will grow. We can't wait to have a bigger, positive impact!
